Chetan Chauhan, ex-India cricketer & UP minister, passes away due to Covid

<p>Serving Uttar Pradesh minister and former India cricketer Chetan Chauhan passed away due to Covid-19 on August 16. He had been hospitalised since July due to the Covid infection. He was aged 73 and is survived by wife Sangeeta and son Vinayak. He was UP's Sainik Welfare, Home Guard, PRD and Civil Security minister. Chauhan had played 40 Tests and 7 ODIs, charting 2,084 Test runs with 16 half-centuries. He shared 11 Test century stands with Sunil Gavaskar, with 10 of them for the opening wicket. Tributes poured in from across the political and sporting worlds. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was anguished by Chauhan's passing away while UP CM Yogi Adityanath expressed anguish at his colleague's death. Current and former cricketers including Virat Kohli, Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir also condoled his death. Watch the full video for more.</p>

MS Dhoni retires: Jharkhand CM pitches farewell match in Ranchi

<p>Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren urged BCCI to host a farewell match for MS Dhoni in Ranchi. The legendary cricketer's childhood coach Chanchal Bhattacharya reiterated CM Soren's idea. This came after the Ranchi lad's announcement of retirement from international cricket. 'Captain Cool' announced his retirement via an Instagram post on August 15. India's one of the finest captains left swarms of his fans heartbroken with the announcement. “CM Soren has suggested a farewell match. I think it is a great idea. I appeal to BCCI to organise a match in Ranchi,” Bhattacharya said. Former BCCI president Anurag Thakur also spoke on Dhoni announcing retirement. Thakur is currently the Minister of State (MoS) for Finance. “Dhoni was an all-rounder, he has contributed a lot to Indian cricket. I wish him good luck, his fans will miss him. I think it's time to give opportunities to young players to play for India. Batsman Suresh Raina has also announced retirement. I extend my best wishes to both the cricketers,” he said.</p>

<p>Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement on Saturday, August 15. Dhoni, former Indian captain, has led India to various great victories under his captaincy. Dhoni has also served with the Indian Army in Kashmir as an honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army unit of the Parachute Regiment (106 Para TA battalion). Dhoni fulfilled his patrolling duties for about 15 days in Kashmir in 2019. Dhoni served as part of Victor Force and undertook guard & post duty too. Dhoni was awarded the honor by the Indian Army in 2011. The former Indian captain is also a qualified paratrooper. Dhoni completed five parachute training jumps in 2015 from Indian Army aircraft. Dhoni had last played for India in an international match in the semi-final loss to New Zealand in 2019. Dhoni had announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2014. 7-yr-old girl emulates Dhoni’s helicopter shot, impresses ex-India cricketers

<p>A seven-year-old girl played the signature helicopter shot of Indian cricketer MS Dhoni. The video of Pari Sharma was shared by former India opener Aakash Chopra. He also added his commentary in the 18 seconds video. Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar too took note of Pari's cricketing skills. Pari, a seven-year-old girl from Haryana's Rohtak, is coached by her father. She aspires to represent Indian women's cricket team and break all batting records. Pari's father had played with former India cricketer Ajay Ratra and Joginder Sharma. This is not the first time Pari has caught the eye of former cricketers. Earlier, Pari had bowled over former cricketers with her solid technique. Pari's first video surfaced on social media in April this year. She was appreciated by cricketers Nasser Hussain, Michael Atherton and Michael Vaughan. The English captains were in awe of the 7-year-old's batting. India women cricketers like Shikha Pandey too had reacted on the clip.</p>

Covid: Gymnast Dipa Karmakar resumes training after 5 months

<p>Gymnast Dipa Karmakar resumed training after more than five months. Karmakar was on a break due to the raging Covid-19 pandemic. The athlete was back in the gym to enhance her gymnastic skills. Karmakar was seen flexing muscles to get back in action. “I am feeling glad that after over five months I came to the gym. All the gyms were shut due to the coronavirus pandemic in March. I thank Tripura Sports Council for giving me a training opportunity. We were undergoing online fitness training all this while,” Gymnast Dipa Karmakar said. The gymnast resumed training under supervision of her coach BS Nandi. “I started giving online classes during the lockdown. As of now, the aim is to get these players back in their form,” Dipa Karmakar's coach, BS Nandi said. The Coronavirus pandemic took a toll on sports activities across the world. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was also postponed until next year. The event has been scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.</p>

IPL 2020: BCCI, Chinese firm Vivo suspend title sponsorship ties

<p>The BCCI has suspended the IPL title sponsorship deal with Chinese mobile phone company Vivo for the event's upcoming edition. This comes amid tension with China at the LAC in Ladakh. 'The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for Indian Premier League in 2020,' a press release from the BCCI stated. Vivo won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of Rs 2190 crore, approximately Rs 440 crore per annum. The BCCI is now likely to float a tender for new IPL title sponsors as mandated by its constitution. The T20 league was forced out of India due to the rising Covid-19 cases  and will now start on September 19 in the UAE. The decision comes after massive backlash on social media. Earlier, India had banned Chinese firm ByteDance's TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps, and made approval processes more stringent for Chinese companies wanting to invest in the country. We're super excited for this new step of our life together and humbly ask your blessings and well wishes,” Natasa had written on Instagram. The same pictures were also re-posted by Pandya on his instagram handle. Pandya got engaged to the Serbian actor on January 1 in Dubai.</p>

<p>World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the latest tennis player to test positive for Covid-19. In a statement, the Serbian confirmed that he and his wife Jelena have tested positive. Djokovic, who is asymptomatic, also added that his kids have tested negative. He recently took part in a tennis exhibition series he organised in Serbia and Croatia.
