Lopetegui was fired by Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales on Wednesday - a day after Madrid made the unexpected announcement that Lopetegui had agreed to leave the national team for European champion Madrid after the World Cup in Russia. Chess star Soumya Swaminathan boycotts event in Iran over hijab law

<p>Indian chess star Soumya Swaminathan is boycotting the upcoming championship in Iran in protest at having to wear an Islamic headscarf or hijab. The former world junior girls champion said in a Facebook post that the dress code at the Asian Nations Chess Cup starting next month violated her rights. Under Iranian law, women can only show their face, hands and feet and are supposed to wear only modest colours and wear the hijab in public places. Swaminathan criticised chess officials for allotting events to countries without taking players' rights into account. </p>

USA, Mexico and Canada to host FIFA World Cup 2026

<p>The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after FIFA's congress voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to back the tri-nation joint bid for the tournament and leave Morocco to miss out for the fifth time. FIFA World Cup 2018: How VAR will be communicated to fans

<p>The referees appointed for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia trained on 12th July, two days before the opening game. One of the big talking points has been the issue of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) being used in the World Cup finals for the first time. Fans will be shown clips of the passage of play that was under revision on a big screen inside the stadium but only once the referee has made his decision. “Once play has restarted the clip of the incident will be shown”, Collina said. “So the public at the stadium will have the possibility, as well as the public in front of the television, to see the clip that convinced the referee to change his mind.” (Video courtesy - SNTV) </p>

FIFA World Cup 2018: Mohamed Salah continues rehabilitation

<p>For a third consecutive Egypt training session, Mohamed Salah continued to prepare for the World Cup away from his teammates. It looks less and less likely that the Liverpool forward will be ready to represent the Egypt national football team in their Group A opener against Uruguay on 15th June. Salah injured his shoulder under a challenge from Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final and has been in a race against time ever since. Despite his lack of participation, Salah is still the main attraction with soccer fans in Grozny, where Egypt have based themselves for the tournament. If Salah doesn't make it back in time for Uruguay, his next target will be to get fit for a clash with hosts Russia on 19th June, before Egypt round off their Group A campaign against Saudi Arabia in Volgograd six days later. FIFA World Cup 2018: Argentina without Lionel Messi in training

<p>Argentina held an open practice session on Tuesday at their Bronnitsy training base, 54 kilometres south of the centre of Moscow. However, there was no sign of mega-star Lionel Messi, The FC Barcelona striker, along with other players expected to be in the starting XI for Argentina's opening Group D game against Iceland, took no part in the session. Cristian Ansaldi, Gabriel Mercado, Federico Fazio, Marcos Acuna, Paulo Dybala, Enzo Perez, Giovanni Lo Celso, Cristian Pavon and Gonzalo Higuain all got a workout, though, as did the goalkeepers. FIFA World Cup 2018: Luis Suarez mobbed by fans in training

<p>Luis Suarez was the undisputed star when the Uruguay national football team held their first training session in Nizhny Novgorod on Monday, a day after landing in Russia for their FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign. Local supporters chanted his name all the way through the training and the Barcelona striker didn't disappoint them, showing his skills on the pitch and staying longer than his team-mates to sign autographs and pose for photographs with fans. Suarez was one of the biggest disappointments for 'La Celeste' four years ago in Brazil. After the striker was expelled from the tournament in disgrace for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini, Uruguay was eliminated by Colombia in the round of 16. The architects had three months to complete the design, and the workers had another 15 months to build the complex. <p>Joachim Loew, Germany's coach has reated strongly on the constant booing of Ilkay Gundogan by German fans after he had met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. FIFA World Cup 2018: Know your venue - St Petersburg

<p>Saint Petersburg Stadium, also referred to as the Zenit Arena, Krestovsky Stadium, and Piter Arena, was opened in 2017 and is the home of FC Zenit. Planning for the new stadium, built at the site of the former Kirov Stadium, began in late 2005, and the first construction works started by the end of 2008. The stadium was initially planned to be completed in 2009, but works were hampered by a series of delays, including a redesign to comply with FIFA requirements and fraud investigations. A retractable roof and a sliding pitch were included in the design to make the stadium one of the most modern arenas. This allows for the movement of a 120 metres by 80 metres pitch through electric motors with the assistance of air pillows.</p><p>The capacity of the stadium has been reduced to 56,196 for regular league matches, but will be increased to around 68,000 for the World Cup (Video credit: SNTV).</p>

The CONIFA World Football Cup is an alternative world championship for those nations, minorities, isolated dependencies and cultural regions who have been sidelined by the official recognition. Organised bythe non-profit Confederation of Independent Football Associations, 16 teams are participating in this 10-day tournament. Messi, Aguero train with Argentina ahead of FIFA World Cup 2018

IPL 2018: List of Winners

<p>After a long wait of six years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy went to the league's most consistent team - Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While CSK won the title as well as our hearts, bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils (DD) dominated the closing ceremony by winning three of the eight awards on offer. DD's Rishabh Pant was named the Emerging Player of IPL 2018. Pant, who ended as the second highest run-getter in the tournament with 684 runs from 14 games, also won the Stylish Player award. Meanwhile, DD's Trent Boult won the Perfect Catch award for his stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli during a league game in April. Defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI), who failed to the play-offs this season, were given the Fairplay Award. Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) Sunil Narine struck twice as he grabbed the Super Striker and Valuable Player awards. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Kane Williamson (735 runs) got the Orange Cap (most runs) while Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) pacer Andrew Tye (24 wickets) got the Purple Cap (most wickets). Shane Watson, who helped CSK chase down the 179-run target in 18.3 overs, won the Player of the Match in the final.</p>

England outplayed by Pakistan, admits Joe Root

<p>England skipper Joe Root admitted that his side was outplayed by Pakistan in their nine-wicket loss to the latter in the Lord's Test on Sunday. “It has been disappointing. Member of D-Company confronted over match-fixing in India-Australia Test

Simona Halep ‘stronger mentally’ in quest for maiden Grand Slam

<p>World number one Simona Halep claims she is “stronger mentally” as she looks to go one better than last year at the French Open and claim her maiden grand slam title.
